What’s it like to be a scientist in a research lab? What would your average day be like? How can you get work experience there? And what’s really going on at the cutting-edge of plant science? There are plenty of opportunities for A-level students to experience life in a professional plant science lab, including summer schools and bursaries. Find out more about these here.
Nuffield Research Placements
A-level / IB students can apply for a paid summer placement working alongside professional scientists, in Universities, industries and research institutions. Some of these are with leading plant science researchers, including at the Sainsbury Lab, Cambridge University, and the John Innes Centre, Norwich.
Inside Science (for students in Suffolk and Norfolk)
The Norwich Bioscience Institutes invited gifted and talented pupils in Years 11, 12 and 13 to spend three days on an intensive workshop, hearing about the research they do at first hand, meeting students, post-docs and research assistants explaining exactly what it is like to work in science.
In2science UK organises two week science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) internships for year 12 students during the summer holiday. These are an excellent way for you to get an insight into careers in science. Approximately 100 placements are offered through the programme every year.
